Al Rangone
Al Rangone, stage name of Roberto Rangone (Alessandria, 28 November 1943), is an Italian musician and songwriter.
Since the nineties he has been nicknamed 'the songwriter of dance music'. He plays guitar, Gilda, Prayer, White sail and Rumba are his best known songs.
He learned to play the guitar from his father and already in 1952, at the age of nine, he performed at the Carlo Zanzi elementary school and at the Vittoria del Cristo cinema-theater (Alessandria district).
In 1953, at the Virginia Marini Theater in Alessandria he won the selection of A microphone for you, a singing event presented by Nunzio Filogamo, thus managing to reach the regional semifinal in Turin. From those years he performed in various events and shows as a singer, interpreting comic roles, even with other artists, in various locations in Piedmont.
In 1959 he joined musical groups and three years later became a singer and double bass player in the Paolo Martino e i Filosofi ensemble. He begins to record several records for The Red Record label.
In 1963 he was a finalist in the Voci Nuove competition in Castrocaro Terme paired with Gigliola Cinquetti; later he publishes a single with Dischi Ricordi, with Una volta in più (written by Alberto Testa and Iller Pattacini). Passed to GTA Records due to the interest of maestro Gigi Cichellero, in 1966 he participated in the Cantagiro with Imagine. After these experiences, he moves to Spain where he continues to be a musician and singer.
In the following 13 years he has artistic experiences with the best international musicians and singers. He works [at what level and with what role?] In fact with sacred monsters like Ray Charles and Frank Sinatra and above all with Julio Iglesias who at the time was taking his first steps in the world of music. It was in that period that the nickname "Al" was born, partly out of nostalgia for his hometown (Alessandria), partly because of the similarity with Al Capone.
Back in Italy, from the second half of the eighties he devoted himself to the smooth, forming his own orchestra. In these years he met his fellow citizen Eugenio Del Sarto, who already had international experience as an author and composer, with whom he composes together Suona chitarra. Since then, the collaboration has never ceased to exist.
Al Rangone begins to record various albums obtaining positive feedback: his cassettes and CDs hit sales peaks in the order of tens of thousands of copies but the official sales charts do not take this parallel market into account.
The first disc for dance music, recorded a few months after his return from Spain, contains Suona chitarra and the autobiographical Quell'uomo sono io, later all the great names in dance, from Franco Bagutti to Franco Bastelli, from Titti Bianchi to Patrizia, from Emilio Zilioli to Mauro Levrini have recorded songs by Rangone and Del Sarto.
In 1993 Nilla Pizzi also wanted to interpret some of their songs: Stornellante vagabondo, Melodia italiana, La nostra musica, the aforementioned Suona chitarra and above all Vela bianca which, thanks also to the numerous Rai television passages, becomes a great success of the Emilian singer and gives to its authors even greater credibility.
In 1995, due to a series of favorable circumstances and also thanks to his friend Angelo Zibetti, patron of Radio and Studio Zeta, Al Rangone arrives at Caterina Caselli's record company, Sugar. Sugar's work has served a great deal to consolidate Al Rangone's position in dance music with news reports, important television interviews (Mixer) and hosted in popular talk shows (Tappeto Volante with Luciano Rispoli, Maurizio Costanzo Show with Maurizio Costanzo and Italian party with Caterina Balivo). All this allowed the television mass media to become aware of the world of orchestras and dance music.
A missed opportunity is the participation in the Sanremo Festival paired with Iva Zanicchi, with whom he should have presented the song The Boys.
Over the years Al Rangone has collaborated not only with Eugenio Del Sarto, but also with other authors. First of all Gianni Stellavato, Mauro Rota and Mario Zaniboni, who have provided ideas for songs such as I Ragazzi, È la vita che va, L'isola, Che male fa, Dolce sentimento, Ma che bella è la vita and Onda Latina. Gilda (Hollywood lady) was born instead from an idea of Lucia Bui and Gigi Chiappin always in collaboration with Del Sarto and with Rangone himself.
One of the most important awards he has obtained is the Provincial Oscar of Success, an award coming from his province.
